Charles Harry Humphriss (1867-1943) was a French-American sculptor known for his works that often depicted Native American subjects and themes of the American West. Born in France, Humphriss emigrated to the United States and became part of the late 19th and early 20th-century artistic movements focusing on the romanticization of the American frontier. Bronze was the medium he worked primarily in and "Appeal to the Great Spirit" was cast in bronze in 1906. Other comparably-sized examples of this sculpture that have come to market recently have sold at auction for prices ranging from $1,500-6,000, with higher prices paid for works sold in specialized Western Art auctions
