An original oil painting of what appears to be an Italian farm scene but could be wrong about location of subject.. Writing on back upper left corner of frame: 9/70 from Rome Fred Lipwell 90- Frame 70- Nation Farm Lo 8 & E NW Mr. Wong It's a thickly laid impasto. First letter of signature is definitely an "S". Last letter appears to have an accent mark over it but could be an embellished "i". other letters unclear but looks to be about five letters total. Overall 35" x 24". Hand- stretched canvas. Heavy frame seems built around canvas. Needs a cleaning.
This was a gift from friend in Burlington, Vermont. No other history on the piece.
Thank you for submitting your item for appraisal. This appears to be an italian landscape painting of the 1960s, depicting village houses near a river. It is a well done painting by a professional artist, using the palette knife to create a vivid impasto. I can´t see a full signature, if such actually exist it might no lead to any specific biography. Several artist used the same technique to produce paintings for home decor and the signature may just be a pseudonym. The estimate is based on similar paintings by lesser known italian artists actually sold at auction.
