Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

I've appraised and handled antique and vintage fans for more than 25 years and I can tell you that this is not as old as 1780. I can tell this from the quality of the figural painting and the condition of the back - it's most likely from the late 19th Century - circa 1880.

The market for fans is pretty soft at the moment, and it's complicated by ivory bans that have forbidden things with ivory from being bought or sold in certain states (for a good explanation of the restrictions, see https://www.fws.gov/frequently-asked-questions-about-elephant-ivory).

My valuation is based on the value of similar fans that have been sold legally at auction. Mearto is not recommending selling them, responsible for any consequences of selling them or liable for any fees or fines of selling them.

Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

An antique Rococo Revival carved and hand-painted and parcel gilt ivory hand fan
French, late 19th Century (circa 1875-1900)
Of conventional form with inlaid and pierced ivory ribs and a painted paper shade painted on one side with figures in a landscape and other floral and swag motifs; the back painted with flowers, unsigned.
Fan material: paper, paint, gilding
Stick material: ivory, applied (paste, glass or metal) sequins
