22 x 5 1/2
Hello,
This 22-inch tall ivory figurine is intricately carved from a single tusk, depicting a graceful woman in flowing robes adorned with floral and beadwork motifs. The detailing suggests a Chinese Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) influence, with possible inspiration from Guanyin, the bodhisattva of compassion, or a noblewoman from a classical Chinese tale.
These types of carvings were particularly popular during the 19th and early 20th centuries, often commissioned as luxury objects for aristocrats and collectors. The craftsmanship suggests a highly skilled artisan, potentially from an ivory workshop in Beijing, Canton (Guangzhou), or Hong Kong, which were centers for fine ivory carving.
Condition & Market Value
• Condition: Appears to be in good condition with minor wear, which is expected for an older ivory carving.
• Craftsmanship: The level of detail, including fine facial features and elaborate drapery, increases its desirability.
• Market Considerations: Due to CITES restrictions on ivory, selling it legally requires provenance documentation proving pre-ban status.
