Ink on paper 1951
16”x12”
Dear Yassine,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The presented object appears to be an enamel on paper "drip" painting in the classic abstract Expressionist style. The painting measures approximately 16 x 12 in. and has been attributed to the American painter Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) due to the presence of the signature in the bottom right corner of the composition and a label on the verso that appears to be from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. This piece is in good condition and no severe damage is visible in the images provided.
The work is very similar, but not identical to this piece that sold at Sotheby's in 2011:
https://www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/ecatalogue/2011/contemporary-art-evening-sale-n08791/lot.73.html, which has impeccable provenance.
Pollock was not known to paint such similar works, since a large component of his style and practice was the irreplicable and seemingly random "drips" of paint onto his canvas. Therefore, the unfortunate conclusion from this investigation is that the work of art presented is most likely a forgery, which holds no market value.
If you have questions or concerns, I would recommend that you get in touch with our authentication team by email at [email protected]. The label on the verso of the work does include a catalogue raisonné reference number, which could easily be checked to confirm or refute this initial opinion of authenticity.
Kind regards,
Anne
