Description

Overall, the decade of the 1940s was one of significant artistic and professional growth for Lawrence. He established a successful relationship with the Downtown Gallery in New York City, exhibited frequently, and received wide recognition and critical acclaim for his work. Lawrence voluntarily entered the Hillside Hospital in Queens in 1949 as a psychiatric patient, the mounting pressures and accumulated stress of his new-found fame resulted in severe depression, where he would remain for almost a year. Lawrence’s paintings following his hospitalization are characterized by a more introspective approach, reflecting the personal insights he gained during this time. Solitaire (1950) was completed shortly after he left the hospital, evoking a dual reference through its title and subject to the card game and the man playing alone. From the investigation i made : ( after leaving the hospital he painted some white people paintings) I will post reo of his white people paintings (man playong cards) ( men walking) those are not mine Thanks

Dear Yassine,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

The presented object appears to be a mixed painting, depicting two bald white men in a psychiatric hospital. The painting measures approximately 14 x 11 in. and has been attributed to the American painter Jacob Lawrence (1917-2000) due to the presence of the signature in the bottom right corner of the composition. This piece is in good condition and no severe damage is visible in the images provided.

The work is very similar, but not identical to this piece that sold at Sotheby's in 2011:
https://www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/ecatalogue/2011/american-paintings-furniture-folk-art-and-silver-n08773/lot.204.html

However, the presented object differs in both quality and materials. It is possible that it could be a study for the work sold by Sotheby's in 2011, but this seems unlikely. Therefore, the unfortunate conclusion from this investigation is that the work of art presented is most likely a forgery, which holds no market value.

Kind regards,
Anne
