Hi - I have this Katana that I am trying to obtain more information about and an appraisal for
the blade is 73cm long
My grandfather gave me this sword - I believe he obtained this when he was in Japan during WW2
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry, and I apologize for the delay. This katana is a "Shin-Gunto" sword for Japanese army officers in World War Two. It appears to have a machine-made blade for military use. The fittings appear to be from the earlier parts of the war, as they are made more intricately and with more attention to detail. The cord wrapped scabbard is different than the standard pattern, and was likely a customization made by the officer who owned it, or done after the war. The sword is in fair condition, with some active rust present on the blade, and a consistent gray patina throughout. The scabbard is in good shape and the cord wrapping does not appear to be significantly damaged. Given the condition of this piece, and completed auctions of similar items, a fair market estimation is 700-750 dollars. Please reach out with any questions.
