What does this mean?

Hello Helen,

This item is a woodblock Japanese print, or ukiyo-e, titled “Fujin Sogaku Juken” (Ten Examples of Study of Women’s Faces) - specifically the piece “Washing Hair” by the renowned artist Utamaro Kitagawa (1750-1806). Utamaro is considered one of the greatest ukiyo-e artists, particularly famous for his portraits of women and beauties of the Yoshiwara district in Edo (modern-day Tokyo).

The print showcases Utamaro’s distinctive style, characterized by meticulous attention to detail, refined lines, and a sophisticated use of color. “Washing Hair” is a part of the “Fujin Sogaku Juken” series, where Utamaro meticulously studied and portrayed various facial expressions and daily activities of women.
