What does this mean?

Hello Suzann,

Thank you for your appraisal inquiry with Mearto. I am very sorry for the delay in your appraisal and thank you for your patience. The item presented appears to be a Chinese scroll painting depicting a Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara in the white-robed manifestation, also known as Baiyi Guanyin. The scroll appears to date to the early-mid 20th century. Unfortunately, I cannot translate the inscription to the lower right. However, these inscriptions are usually short proverbs or poems and the seal is usually an artisan shop or previous collector. These works are typically painted by workshops.

The estimate provided is based on recent auction estimates and results of other comparable Chinese scroll paintings featuring similar depictions, taking into consideration size and age. The estimate is contingent on a full condition report. Please note asking or dealer prices may vary. Thank you and please take care.

Hello Sara,

Thank you for your expert advice and research. I am wondering if the Baiyi Guanyin is a different name for Quan Yin. My understanding is that she was/is a goddess that is worshiped in many Asian cultures. When you say that the scroll was painted in a workshop does this mean that this has been reproduced several times? I have never been able to find this particular scroll on the internet. The condition of this scroll is very good. No rips, no stains, and has been cared for. What would you suggest I do at this point to sell this item?

Hi Suzann,

Baiyi translates to White-Robed and the terms Guanyin and Quan Yin are interchangeable in most cases. When you look up the term Guanyin, you may notice alternate terms or spellings. The workshops produced scroll for export. Artist would create several work, very similar in composition and subject matter but each piece have unique qualities.

When you submitted the item, you were asked if you wanted to sell the item. If you selected "Yes" or "Maybe," the item was placed in a database that is accessed by auction houses. If an auction house expresses interest, they will contact you. You can find out more from our Consignment page (https://mearto.com/consign)
