Japanese Geisha Painting. 47 X 22.5 Matted and framed
Father obtained while in the Navy in Japan during WWII. Gave to my Mother. She had it framed. Signature supposedly says the artist is Kiyohiko
Hello Tom,
Thank you for your appraisal inquiry with Mearto. The item presented appears to be a gouache painting on fabric, possibly silk, by Ishikawa Kiyohiko (Japanese; 石川清 彦; 1900-1963). Ishikawa is best known for his scroll paintings of young women, often titling the paintings "Bijin" or "Beauty." The scroll painting is likely known as "Bijin in Cherry Blossom Garden" or the like. It also includes the artist's signature to the lower corner.
Unfortunately, there is a limited amount of information regarding the artist and a limited amount of auction records. The estimate is based on the few auction records of comparable gouache scroll paintings on silk by Ishikawa Kiyohiko. Please note that asking or retail prices may vary. Thank you and please take care.
