What does this mean?

Thank you for contacting Mearto. This is a hand-painted 2-panel Japanese silk folding screen. The artist depicts a full sun over a bending bough of white chrysanthemums. In Japanese tradition, white chrysanthemums are used for funerals and symbolize purity and sorrow.

The subjects are skillfully painted and the minimalist composition is well-balanced. Based on the style and condition, this was probably made during the 20th century.

The paper itself is gold-flecked in a pattern forming haze or clouds. The dark lacquer frame, brass accenting and brocade framing are in good condition.

Upon comparison with sales of similar items at auction, the Fair Market Value of this piece is between $150 and $200.
