Woodblock Print of Kabuki Character Watonai

Style of the Meiji Period (1868-1912)

A great example of early 20th century woodblock print on mulberry rice, or hosho paper. Well defined with vibrant color. I believe this is a depiction of a play actor in costume for kabuki character Watonai. Watonai is a warrior character based on the trials and true story of a cultural hero, a Chinese exile living in Japan. It is difficult to attribute a maker to items that are edition and prints. Woodblocks can be passed from studio to studio and are often made in a group and larger production process. The reproduction of woodblock and printing processes would often transform the stories of the depicted, much like our idea of modern comic books. This is a similar pose to an item I identified in the British Museum. Again, I do believe this is a different edition and style and not made by the same artist or studio. From images it appears to be in great condition with little fading; set in a red frame with glass face. Measurements (in cm) 37.5cm Height x 25cm Width.
