Hi Matt,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
J.W. Dant Sour Mash Whiskey is a historic American whiskey brand with deep roots in Kentucky distilling history. It was named for Joseph Washington Dant and was founded in 1836 in Kentucky. The company is known for using the log still method — a hollowed-out poplar log used as a primitive still, a technique associated with early American frontier distilling.
"Sour mash" refers to a method of whiskey fermentation where a portion of the mash from a previous distillation is added to the new batch. This helps control pH, ensures consistent yeast performance, and prevents bacterial contamination.
Bottles of the 1916 vintage, bottled in 1932, don't come to auction often; when they do, they usually sell between $500 and $800 but the condition of this bottle will negatively affect its value unfortunately, which is now $300-500.
Please let us know if you have additional items to appraise, or questions/concerns, and thank you again for using Mearto.
