Thank you for your appraisal inquiry with MeArto. The item presented appears to be color lithograph by Karel Appel (Dutch; 1921 - 2006), signed in plate. The print is from the a collaborative portfolio of Pop Art lithographs titled "One Cent Life." It was created to accompany poems written by Chinese poet Wallace Ting (1929 - 2010) and edited by American painter Sam Francis.
The image was printed by Maurice Beaudet, Paris and is part of an edition of 2000 taken from the unbound elephant-folio. The portfolio was published in an edition of 2000 by E.W. Kornfeld in Bern, Switzerland and consist of a collection of 62 lithographs and serigraphs in colors on BFK Rives paper by 28 masters of Pop Art and COBRA movements. The portfolio includes work by Andy Warhol, Jim Dine, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Indiana, Tom Wesselmann and many more.
Karel Appel was a Dutch painter, poet, and sculptor known for his avant-garde work. Karel was part of an artist group formed in 1948 called Cobra, whose members strove to break away from current art movements and pursue more experimental work. Appel lived and worked in Amsterdam, Paris, Brazil, Yugoslavia, Mexico, Florence, and New York, and his prolific work is included in many important collections such as the Tate Modern Museum in London and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
