This is an antique early 19th century, Victorian era, hand colored and framed aquatint print that was produced by the German engraver Johann Friedrich Jügel (1772 - 1833). The image itself is a reproduction image by Jügel of a painting by German artist Karl Friedrich Schinkel (1781 - 1841). The Jügel print is based on a set design painting entitled Die Jungrau von Orleans by Schinkel. The image was a proposed set design for the play, Die Jungrau von Orleans, or the Maid of Orleans by Friedrich Schiller (1759 - 1805). The auction sale price in 1995 of $1610 against a $400 - $600 estimate was driven primarily by provenance, or the history of past ownership. This was previously owned by famed Russian ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev (1938 - 1993). 1995 was during a height of the art market and Nureyev was still a mainstream pop culture figure. The market has changed since then and this print may possibly not exceed the sale price from that sale.
