Hello Mark,
I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal,
Considering the photographs, overall pattern, knot density and the colours, I concluded that this is an Entirely Hand Knotted Persian Kashan Style Rug made in Pakistan. The piece dates back to the period from 1960 to 1980. The piece is florally decorated with a classical Kashan Rug pattern. The piece is different from the traditional Kashan Rugs with central decoration, with a central medallion. The piece is very elaborate in it's design, entirely florally decorated. The piece has a central vertical line of motifs, which is designed as a single flower line in a different colours. The general colour palette of the piece is very appropriate for a Kashan Rug from this period unlike most Pakistan made pieces. The piece is vertically symmetrical while it is horizontally not. The vertical line of floral motifs are acting as a mirror that resembles the life and the afterlife. Floral motifs include cloves, roses and tulips as well as other conceptual flower types. The metaphor of the two worlds is very common in Persian rugs and it was adopted by the Pakistani ateliers as well since the patterns were copied. The piece is knotted wool on cotton. The knot density of the piece is average to high and therefore the motifs on the piece are rendered in high quality. The central are is knotted on a dark blue base while the borders were decorated on a red base. The motifs and the design is above average for sure. The piece is a collectible and has a high decorative value. The piece is in good condition without visible problems.
