My wife believed this rug was silk on silk, but a few years ago it was appraised as silk on cotton, 1360x775mm, purchased in Kashmir in 1970's, only hung on wall since; colours still vibrant, no damage, some rings sewn in to top border for hanging.
My wife, who has passed away, purchased this rug in the early 1970's during her visit to Kashmir.
Hand knotted silk rugs are produced on a loom and the loom strings would definitely be cotton. This is a vintage later 20th century Kashmir produced personal sized 'prayer rug' as denoted by the stylized design of an entrance to a mosque. It is done in rich emerald colors. The estimate is based on actual recent past auction sales of comparables.
