Rifle length. 65.5in. Barrel 48.75in. G Young & JP Stump engraved in barrel. O'Brien engraved on Flintlock works. Barrel in very good condition. Won in a poker game by my great uncle aboard a ship. He was a merchant marine.
Have pictures of Uncle Walt posing with the rifle. As stated previously, he won it in a poker game aboard a ship. I have seen reference to the G Young as a gunsmith so assuming JP Stump would be an apprentice.
Dear Leroy,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The presented object appears to be a so-called Kentucky rifle wit an engraved barrel naming the weaponsmiths G. Young and JP. Stump. The flintlock is engraved with the name O'Brien. The rifle length is 65.5 inches and the octagonal barrel itself has a length of 48.75 inches. The stock was made out of the characteristic striped tiger maple wood. There are just rifles mentioned made by a G. Young in Great Britain. A second G(eorge) Young is mentioned in Hampshire County. Some engravings on the barrel are comparable to this rifle. He was active in the middle of the 19th century.
This piece is in good condition and there are no serious damages visible.
An estimation would be between 1000 to 2500 USD.
This estimation is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.
With kind regards,
Georg
Dear Leroy,
Sadly the market for historical weapons changed during the last decades. The estimation is adapted to auction house hammer prices. In many cases, pricing for similar examples available on the primary (retail) market varies and are often higher than the secondary (auction) market examples. When you want to sell this artwork you have to use the secondary auction market.
What was the estimate of the last apprisals and when? What named the estimate? We have to differentiate between an market value and insurance value for example.
With kind regards,
Georg
This appraisal appears to be very low as compared to others that have been explored in the past, at least 75% under!
