Hello, I have a possible Utamaro hand painting. The condition is excellent. I got it from my mother and she got it from hers back in the 80's.
30in x 25in
Hello, this item is a framed reproduction after the celebrated Japanese ukiyo-e master Kitagawa Utamaro rather than an original hand-painted work by the artist. The composition depicts a bijin-ga, or image of a beautiful woman, one of Utamaro’s most famous subjects. Several characteristics visible in the photographs indicate a modern decorative reproduction, including the bright, even coloration, the clean white background, the absence of visible woodblock printing texture, embossing, or period paper characteristics, and the overall presentation within a modern Western frame and mat. Original Utamaro works date from the late 18th and early 19th centuries and were produced as woodblock prints rather than paintings in this format. The seals and inscriptions appear to have been mechanically reproduced along with the image rather than individually applied.
Condition appears very good, with strong colors and an attractive presentation suitable for display. While original Utamaro prints can command many thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars depending on rarity and condition, this example falls into the category of decorative reproduction art inspired by the artist’s work. Similar framed reproductions typically trade based on decorative appeal rather than collector demand. Based on the photographs provided, the fair market value is approximately $75 to $200 USD.
