Hi Kyle,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
"Notitia Orbis Antiqui" is a foundational work in historical geography. It offers a comprehensive description of the known world in antiquity, particularly during the classical Greco-Roman period. The book includes descriptions of the geography of the ancient world, references to classical sources (Greek and Roman authors) and maps and tables to illustrate geographical knowledge.
Keller is most famous for popularizing the tripartite division of history into Ancient, Medieval, and Modern periods. This chronological framework remains standard in historical studies today. "Knowledge of the Ancient World" is among the first scholarly attempts to systematically document the geography of the ancient world, aligning historical and geographical data. The book was widely used during the Enlightenment as a reference for scholars and educators trying to better understand the classical world.
This is not the first edition of this book; it was first printed in 1686 and later expanded several times, including this edition.
I've found a few other copies of this book online - in what appear to be a comparable condition - with retail prices between $2,000-3,000; two recent auction sales put the fair market value of this at $1,200-1,800.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
