51”x64.5” Charles Kvapil Painting. It likely needs some restoration. 1939. Likely needs some restoration, but still looks great hanging.
My father purchased this painting fro Peter Best (of Best department store) in the mid 1960’s when Nordstrom acquired Best. This was purchased by Peter in Russia my father believes-it was on display in the lingerie department at the Best department store. My father asked to purchase it when the store was being remodeled for Nordstrom.
Dear Catherine,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The presented object appears to be a painting made in oil paint on canvas with the measurements of 64.5 x 51 inches. The painting depicts a cabaret dancer in her dressing room with an assistant. The painting is signed in the left lower corner by the Belgian artist Charles Kvapil (1884-1957). The painting is dated 1939 and on the reverse titled "La Vedette".
Works by this artist were recently offered and sold on the international auction market. Sadly the market situation changed the last years and paintings by this artist don't reach the limit of 10.000 USD. Against this trend, a painting was sold in 2020 in Paris for 50.000 EUR.
This piece is in good condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 6.000 to 12.000 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.
An artwork of such high potential value requires further authentication research. This estimate is provided on the condition of authenticity.
With kind regards,
Georg
