What does this mean?

Hi Renee,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

Bahariye Halı is a well-known Turkish carpet and rug manufacturer based in Gaziantep, Turkey, a major center for the textile and carpet industry in Turkey; it is particularly famous for machine-made carpets. Bahariye Halı is recognized for producing high-quality rugs using both traditional and modern weaving techniques, often incorporating New Zealand wool.

This is a modern Turkish rug, made in or inspired by Anatolian carpets, which are characterized by geometric shapes and muted colors, which your carpet has.
The label on the back translates as follows:
"Nesilden nesile" means "From generation to generation." Bahariye is the brand name.
Süper çiftmekik yünlü halı means "Super double-shuttle wool carpet." Yeni Zelanda yünü = New Zealand wool. 500.000 nokta/m² sıklıkta = 500,000 points (knots) per square meter. Çiftmekikli tezgahlarda dokunmuştur = Woven on double-shuttle looms.

I've no doubt this was not an inexpensive purchase - most rugs are quite costly to buy and ship - and it's unfortunate that their fair-market value at auction rarely exceeds more than a small fraction of what you might have paid. If this were in a shop, I would not be surprised to see a retail price of between $5,000 and $10,000 but rugs of similar size, vintage and condition that have sold at auction recently usually sell for between $1,500 and $2,500.

Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

A vintage Anatolian Turkish hand-loomed wool rug
made by Bahariye, Gaziantep, Turkey
With a cream or light-brown central field centering a geometric medallion with red-brick ground, red and green spandrels (corners) and a navy-ground border. Selvedges trimmed or not original present.
8 feet 6 inches by 11 feet
CONDITION: This rug appears to be in generally good condition; value assumes no tears, stains, odors or repairs.
PROVENANCE: Inherited
$ 1,500-2,500*
*represents a fair-market value for auction purposes; retail or asking price may vary.

Please let us know if you have additional items to appraise, or questions/concerns, and thank you again for using Mearto.

Thank you Delia,

could I have help in selling it? I do have another that is not yet unpacked and will be interested in that's value as well.

Delia Jun 09, 22:40 UTC

Hi Renee,
You have options and we're happy to help!
If this is marked "for sale" with a "public" status, it's already listed on Mearto's marketplace and seeable to interested buyers who might reach out to you directly with offers (you're under no obligation to accept any).
Alternatively, you can take advantage of the partnership Mearto has with Catawiki, an online platform that conducts auctions around the world; because of our partnership, linked appraisals by a Mearto appraisal will skip the usual vetting process. For more information on that, see the Catawiki link on our page ( https://www.mearto.com/catawiki). If that's something you'd like to consider, let me know and I'll send you the specific link to use to shortcut the process.
A third option would be to take this to a local auction house - if you do that, please be aware that they will appraise it themselves (should be a free service) but if you consign it to sale with them, they'll charge you a commission and other fees (insurance, photography). I can't where you are located but we might be able to put you in touch with a reputable house that does well with rugs and which won't charge you an arm and a leg...
Let me know if you still need suggestions - have a great evening!

Hi Delia,

I am absolutely interested in having you help me to sell this rug. I did go back and write "For Sale" in the space on your page. I am totally unsure how to proceed with catawiki, I took a look and would need you to help me list it. Would that be possible? I don't really want to go to another auction myself, i was happy to find you and Mearto and hope that we could proceed to get this sold. I look forward to hearing from you. Also I do have another turkish rug about the same size that I still need to unpack, and would be interested in selling that as well. I look forward to hearing the next steps. thanks so much

Hi Renee,
I've forwarded this inquiry to someone who can walk you through the process.
As for the other rug, you'd need to start a separate appraisal for that; we can take it from there.
Thanks!
Delia

Delia, thanks so much, I will send pics and start another appraisal process once I get the other carpet unpacked. Thanks again for your help, I look forward to moving forward with the sales process!
