What does this mean?

Hi Debbie,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

The Louis Vuitton Coussin is a relatively recent bag, but it became important very quickly. It debuted in Louis Vuitton's Spring/Summer 2021 collection overseen by Nicholas Ghesquière, LV's women's artistic director. The term means "cushion", an obvious reference to its unusually padded, pillow-like construction. This was a radical departure from the architectural quality beyond the traditional structured Monogram bags and is a good example of how Ghesquière has expanded Louis Vuitton's handbag vocabulary

According to one purse blog, oversized chains were a major handbag trend around 2019–21, particularly following the success of Bottega Veneta's Chain Pouch. The Coussin essentially translated that trend into the Louis Vuitton vocabulary while making the chain interchangeable.

The removable chunky Edge Chain is one of the most important design features of the Louis Vuitton Coussin. It isn't just hardware; it was part of what made the Coussin look new and helped distinguish it from earlier Louis Vuitton handbags. Engraved with LV's Monogram motifs, the chain is a piece of visual branding.

Removing the chain changes the character of the bag: with the chain attached, the Coussin has a bold, jewelry-like, fashion-forward appearance but without it, the Coussin becomes much quieter and can be carried using the textile/leather strap or as a clutch.

Louis Vuitton's current policy is that it does not sell spare parts separately. For a missing or damaged Coussin Edge Chain, LV directs customers to its Care Services/repair department, where a replacement may sometimes be available depending on the bag and parts availability.

However, the chain is occasionally offered on the secondary market, with retail prices ranging from $300 to $600. If you're looking to sell this, I would price it at around $600, not only to risk underselling this but to align this with other examples currently listed for sale online.
