This is a vintage, 20th century, about 1920s, original Louis Vuitton monogram steamer and car trunk. Louis Vuitton was established in 1854 in Paris, France as a malletier, or trunk maker. Louis Vuitton himself left home at the age of 13 and made his way to Paris. By age 16 he began to apprentice with a box maker and built a reputation as a very good custom luggage maker. In his thirties he was appointed official luggage maker to the wife of Napoleon III. From the images, this appears to be in excellent condition. The monogram design was not introduced until 1896, by Georges Vuitton which was 4 years after Louis had passed. The monogram pattern on your staved body trunk is hand stencilled. The original paper label with serial number is fully intact, dating this to the mid 1920s and the B. Altman luxury retailer label is also affixed along with the monogram initials of the original owner. The estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail 'asking prices' can be higher and vary.
