My father purchased this trunk at an auction of Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian’s estate sometime before 1979; it’s approximately 22” x 22” x 44.” It’s painted canvas, but there are some scrapes on the trunk.
Sotheby’s auction, NY. Circa 1979 or earlier.
Dear Gideon,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. The apprised object appears to be a so-called steamer trunk or steamer wardrobe with the measurements of 44 x 22 x 22 inches. This trunk was made by Louis Vuitton for Saks & Cy in New York. These trunks were used on the long during travels over the Atlantic with steamships and this explains also their name. Nowadays they are wanted objects which are offered and sold on the international auction market.
This piece is in good condition and there are no serious damages visible.
An estimation would be between 6.000 to 12.000 USD.
This estimation is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.
A piece with such a high value needs a further authentification.
With best regards,
Georg
