signed M. Schony. I believe it's oil on canvas but I don't know for sure. It's in very good condition. That's all I know, hoping you can tell me more.
19.5 inches by 23.5 inches tall in frame with 11.5 inches by 15.5 inches showing.
Dear Gary Anderson,
This work appears to be an oil painting on canvas. Based on the photographs provided, the work has slight discoloration to the surface. There appears to be craquelure to the left of center and minor loss to the lower right edge. The painting measures 19.5 x 23.5 inches in frame, and signed "M. Schony" to the lower left.
Stylistically, the work may be attributed to the listed artist M. Schöny (German, born 1913), but there is a slight discrepancy in the use of umlauts and capitalization in signature styles. Regardless, little is known of Schöny's personal life, and the value of the works is driven by quality and composition rather than the artist themselves. In fact, this specific painting is an adaptation of Willem Koekkoek's (Dutch, 1839-1895) "A Street Scene in Haarlem." Both compositions depict the same street corner with only minor changes in the figures present.
European street scene paintings of this type are very common on the art market. As explained above, the quality and composition of the work will drive the value more than the artist attribution, and the work's adaptation of Koekkoek's scene will be an additional feature to note. To establish a Fair Market Value of this work, we will consider the artist's auction record, size of the work, and similar compositions by other artists. Based on these considerations we estimate the Fair Market Value of this painting between $0 and $200.
