Mask bought in Kenya
07 October 2023
Description

Went to Kenya June 2018 and saw this mask at a shop in the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. We bought it there and had it shipped to us in the USA. When we received the mask it smelled like strong smoke like it was recently used in a ceremony. It’s very large and in excellent condition.

What does this mean?

Hello,

Thank you for choosing Mearto for your online appraisal.

Based on the images and information you provided, this item is:

A Nzambe Kana mask. The Nzambe Kana mask is a ceremonial mask crafted by the Kuba people of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It holds great cultural and spiritual significance, representing the spirit of a deceased ancestor. These masks are meticulously carved from wood, featuring distinctive facial features, intricate scarification patterns, and elaborate headdresses. Bright colors and decorative elements, such as cowrie shells and beads, enhance their visual appeal.

Used in various Kuba ceremonies, including funerals and initiation rites, the Nzambe Kana mask is worn by a dancer who embodies the ancestral spirit, facilitating communication between the living and the spiritual realm. These masks also symbolize social status and lineage within Kuba society. Your mask does not present any external sign of usage like scars, missing parts of other signals of use.
