We have recently acquired a painting which we believe was done by the Italian painter Matteo Olivero 1879-1932 It is a scene set on lake Geneva in Switzerland looking towards chillon castle. You can see at the bottom right hand corner of the painting his signature in red, which is identical to some of his signatures. The frame is very old and also has another signature on the back which we are unable to decipher. Unfortunately it’s not in the greatest of condition and requires cleaning and restoration.

Hello Andre,
Thank you very much for submitting your item for an appraisal and for your patience.
The presented object appears to be an oil on (lined) canvas painting depicting a scene on Lake Geneva, which measures approximately 153 x 94cm., is signed "Olivero" in the bottom right corner and looks to be in fair condition with some cleaning and minor restoration required.
The work has been attributed to Matteo Olivero (Italian, 1879-1932). Olivero was an Italian painter known for his contributions to the Divisionist movement, a style characterized by the use of distinct dots and dashes of color, which blend in the viewer's eye to create a luminous effect. His work often depicts his native Piedmontese landscape.
Based on a quick study of the painting, I would not necessarily agree with the attribution to Olivero. However, I will provide a conditional valuation based on the assumption that it is his work, then I would recommend that you get in touch with our team for art authentication (www.authenticate-art.com // email: [email protected]) to learn more about the in-depth research that we can offer to confirm an attribution.
We haven't seen a lot of this artist's work on the market in recent years and those works which have come up are frequently quite small in scale. Given the size of this composition and the demand for his work in the past, I would estimate the current fair market value at $15,000 to $20,000 at a well-advertised auction in Italy, though retail and asking prices may vary.
If you have any questions about my appraisal, please let me know in the comments section below. Thank you and have a great day!
Kind regards,
Anne
