Can you provide any information on the stone sculpture or who I might contact? I acquired it 28 years ago from 3 Hispanic men who were bringing it from Mexico by truck with other stone artifacts. Their English was limited but they explained that once there were 2 and this survived the collapse from the church/ temple. It has had repair.
It stands 4’4”
Hello, this item is a large carved stone sculpture made in a modern interpretation of pre-Columbian styles. The figure shows an angelic or warrior character with wings, a flute, and a feathered headdress. These features do not follow authentic Mayan iconography, which never combined European angel forms with Indigenous motifs. The carving is consistent with late twentieth century workshop production in Mexico, where artisans often create hybrid designs for the tourist and export market. The surface, proportions, and toolwork confirm contemporary manufacture rather than archaeological origin.
The sculpture’s size, four feet four inches, gives it strong decorative value for gardens and interiors. Pieces like this sell primarily as folk art carvings. Market prices for similar hybrid Mexican stone figures usually range between 600 and 1,200 USD depending on condition, weight, and local demand.
