Brown book with red leather binding. Carl Seiler 1874. Engraved in gold lettering on cover with G N Monette (prominent charity hospital of New Orleans physician). Marbled inside covers. Binding a bit loose but not separated. Inside book contains medical diploma from Christian hospital in Chicago Illinois, in dr. Monettes name dated 1903 (first year hospital was open)
Bought from an estate sale in Jackson, Louisiana.
This is an antique, late 19th century, 1876, Victorian era, medical book of microscope plate images in black and white that was arranged by Carl Seiler entitled 'Microphotographs in Histology, Normal and Pathological. In Conjunction with J. Gibbons Hunt and Joseph Richardson'. In the prospectus Seiler states that "this publication is intended to replace the microscope, as far as is possible, for those physicians who have neither opportunity nor leisure to make observations with the instrument for themselves, and also to furnish microscopists, for comparison, correct representations of typical specimens in the domain of normal and pathological histology." This is considered a hard to find publication. The provenance, or past history of ownership of this volume is having been part of the medical library of Dr. G. N. Monette who is associated with a charity hospital of prominence in New Orleans, Louisiana. There is also a medical degree that was placed in the volume. The sale-ability can be increased if offered regionally around New Orleans given the connection to a local physician. The estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail 'asking prices' can be higher and vary.
