Midge, baby, 3-in-1 crib table and cradle
In original box, never opened
Hi Nicole,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The Barbie Happy Family Pregnant Midge & Baby Doll set featured Midge, a longtime Barbie friend, depicted as pregnant, with a removable magnetic belly housing a tiny baby doll (often named Nikki). The set typically includes Midge, the baby, and accessories like a baby blanket, bottle, and a transforming 3‑in‑1 crib/table/cradle. While Barbie’s extended family had been toyed with before, this was one of the first mainstream dolls from Mattel to depict pregnancy so literally via a removable “baby bump.”
This was a controversial part of the Barbie line when Mattel released it in 2002. Upon release, many parents complained the doll promoted teen or unwed pregnancy, especially since initial packaging didn’t prominently show Midge’s husband, Alan. Because of these complaints, major retailers like Walmart pulled the doll from shelves by the end of 2002. After the backlash, Mattel altered packaging to include a wedding ring on Midge and imagery linking her to her husband and older child, and in some cases released versions without the removable belly. I don't see this included in your photos so have to assume it's from the original release.
Because of it's short release time and controversy, some consider original boxed versions to be highly collectible and when other MIB (mint in box) sets have sold at public auctions recently, they usually bring prices ranging from $400 to $600. It's important to note that some private sellers or retailers may be asking higher prices in various online platforms, such as Ebay or Etsy.
