Dear Patrick,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. So that I may best assist you, can you please upload a few close-up images of the barrel, the butt-plate of the gun, and the breech of the rifle with the action open?
Thanks,
Bo Stuck
Just checking the status of the appraisal and if the added images were sufficient? Thank you.
Hello,
This is a Sharps Model 1863 Carbine. After the Civil War, it was converted by the arsenal to fire the .50-70 black powder metallic cartridge. It is in overall good condition. The stock and its fitment to the metal is excellent, and the proofing cartouche is still legible. The receiver still has some original case-coloring left, but most has worn off. The barrel still has most of its bluing present. All of the metal parts have some relatively new active rust present on them. This red rust could be removed by a metalsmith without disturbing the original finish in a significant way, and would add more value to the piece. Given the condition of this piece, and completed auctions of similar items, a fair market estimate is 1,800-1,900 dollars. Please reach out with any questions.
