“Mount Vesuvius, Sketch from Nature, in 1780 by Thomas Barker , the painter of the Woodman”
Grandma
Thank you for submitting your item for appraisal. This appears to be an early work by Thomas BARKER OF BATH (1769-1847). The inscription on the back of the canvas mentions the painting "The Woodman", most likely referring to "The Woodman and his Dog in a Storm", painted circa 1787 (now in the Tate gallery) . The painting in your possession can therefore be dated to 1788 or 1789. During these years the vulcano was rather inactive, no major eruptions have been recorded. Paintings by this artist are sold in a wide spectrum of prices, but an early view of Mount Vesuvius in an untouched condition should sell within the price range listed.
