The appraised work is an acrylic on canvas painting titled ‘Neo Head’ executed by German artist Peter Max (b. 1937) in 2000. The painting depicts a large male head floating in space with bright colors and gestural brushwork. The work is signed at upper left. Max is well known for his rainbow-hued artworks, and typically employs painterly strokes. He was born in Berlin but lived in China, Israel, and Paris before settling in New York. Max studied at the Arts Students League and in addition to his fine art practice, he has also collaborated with corporate brands including 7-UP and Chrysler.
The estimate provided is based on comparables recently offered and sold at auction. Paintings by the artist regularly come up for sale, and the results overall appear fairly consistent. Works tend to sell firmly within or above their high presale estimates, suggesting interest amongst collectors for Max’s paintings. The subject work’s size, composition, condition (based on photographs provided), as well as the artist’s current auction market were taken into consideration when determining the estimate. In many cases, pricing for similar examples available on the primary (retail) market vary, and are often higher than secondary (auction) market examples.
For example, Peter Max “Profile 1986”, which is SIGNIFICANTLY smaller is being sold for $65,000! Another Neo Head by him, which are rare, as he didn’t paint many, is larger and is being sold for $100,000!
Yes, I am aware that the dimensions you quoted were in inches. As I stated initially, the estimate provided was based on comparables sold at auction. I researched the artist’s auction records going back 5 years (for the most relevant data) to determine the estimate. Below are some of the comparables I used.
1. Toulouse Lautrec, 60.25 x 48 Heritage Auctions, 06/7-8/2019 lot 63340, Realized $13,750
• This work is larger, the subject is identifiable and the composition is more complex
2. Neo Man, 60 x 48, John Moran Auctioneers, 11/14/2017 lot 2142, Realized $11,400
• Painting is again larger and more compositionally complex in relation to your painting
3. Neo Head Version I, No. 2, 60 x 48, Clars Auction Gallery, 01/15/2017 lot 6141A, Realized $13,860
• Painting is again larger and more compositionally complex in relation to your painting
As I mentioned earlier, Mearto bases their estimates on previous auction sales (fair market value). In many cases, pricing for similar examples available on the retail or gallery market are often higher, usually to cover various commissions. I hope this clears up any confusion you might have had.
Are you aware that this painting is 48 INCHES by 36 INCHES and not centimeters??? This is 4 FEET by 3 FEET! If you thought the dimensions were in centimeters, then your estimate may be accurate, but original acrylic Peter Max paintings this size go for at least 4 to 5 times what you estimated. If you think your estimate is accurate, I would like to see which comparables you used, their size, their selling price etc. I could show you mine.
