7,2 CM
Hello,
Your item is a Japanese netsuke, intricately carved and decorated, measuring approximately 7.2 cm in height. Netsuke are miniature sculptures traditionally used as toggles to suspend items like tobacco pouches or inro from the sash (obi) of a kimono. This particular example stands out for its highly unusual and humorous depiction of a character with an exaggeratedly tall head, rendered in a comical or exaggerated manner, possibly referencing a figure from Japanese folklore or theater.
Based on the material, which does not melt under heat and has a distinct patina, it is likely ivory or bone rather than plastic. This conclusion is further supported by the carving quality and style. The fine engraved lines filled with pigment, as seen in the folds of the robe and the facial expression, suggest Meiji to early Showa period (late 19th to early 20th century), though its whimsical design leans more toward the later Taisho or early Showa period when netsuke carving became more humorous and stylized for export and collecting purposes. The signature at the base, if authentic, might help further specify the carver or workshop.
