Surrealist landscape and figural black and white lithograph on Strathmore Pastelle paper. Dates from late 1930's to mid 1950's. This piece is numbered 5/8 in pencil in lower left. No signature on it. Measures 15 inches high by 11 inches across.
This piece comes from a collection originally owned by Artist Reima Ratti
Thank you for submitting your item for appraisal. This appears to be a semi abstract linear depiction of a sitting nude, vaguely inspired by Arshille Gorky.
The choice of paper would point to an american artist and the provenance you mention would point to Reima Ratti himself. Reima "Ray" Ratti (1914-1945) was locally known and left artworks ranging from realistic to abstract styles. A few stylisitcally similar Picasso inspired drawings were sold at auction in 2010 and 2013.
The damages to the lithographic stone at the edges are quite unique, if another print, printed from the same stone, should appear on the art market, it would increase the likelihood that this a work by Ratti.
The estimate is based on similar drawings and prints sold at auction.
Thank you.
