Painting is 14.5 x 18 inches.
I found it in a junk shop
Thank you for submitting your item for appraisal. This appears to be an 1840s oil on canvas painting, continental school, depicting a boy and a girl playing. The young boy has just stopped playing being a soldier and joins the elder sister in catching bubbles. The blowing bubbles motif has been a favorite subject through the centuries. The painting in your possession was done by an experienced artitst who might not be listed, or it is a copy of a larger painting, now lost. There is no signature visible, only old auction numbers and an inscription by a later hand "Ranftl" which apparently is an old attribution to Mathias RANFTL (1805-1854) . The estimate is based on similar paintings by unknown or lesser known artists offered or sold at auction. It is a lovely painting, even if the artist remains unknown.
Many thanks for getting back to me! It's great information. Will get it nicely framed for my house. :)
All the best. Sylvia
