What does this mean?

Hi Dianne,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Noritake was one of the most popular names for dinnerware in the mid 20th Century; not only was it handsome and serviceable but it was also comparatively affordable. Increasingly few people today, however, entertain in such a formal way and the market is saturated with services of varying sizes, colors, etc. Because there is less demand than supply, fair-market / auction prices for Noritake remain low, typically bringing $4-6 PER PIECE.

Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

A vintage 97-piece Noritake parcel gilt porcelain part dinner service
unattributed pattern (white with cream lower border, floral trim with red and gilt), made in Japan, bearing the Morimura "M" backstamp in use from 1933, comprising:
12 dinner plates (10")
12 salad plates (8")
12 dessert plates (7")
11 tea cups with 11 saucers
10 coffee cups with 12 plates
12 small plates (6")
1 cream pitcher
1 sugar bowl
1 gravy bowl
1 covered casserole
1 serving platter (11 x 9)
CONDITION: This service appears to be in generally good condition for its age. Some minor wear is expected but assumes no significant breaks, chips or losses.
PROVENANCE: Inherited
$ 400-600 for the set*
*represents a fair-market value for auction purposes; retail or asking price may vary.

Please let us know if you have additional items to appraise, or questions/concerns, and thank you again for using Mearto.

The set does not say bone china so I have no idea if it is bone or porcelain. I can see my hand in the light behind the dinner plate. How would I know what it is?

Delia Aug 19, 19:54 UTC

Hi Dianne,
Noritake worked exclusively in porcelain until later in the 20th Century, at which point it was diligent as to how it marked their wares. If this doesn't say BONE CHINA, it is porcelain.
Thank you for the additional detailed information; you're all set with this appraisal but please let me know if you have questions.
In the meantime, thank you again for using Mearto and have a great day.
