Hello Judy. Thank you for your appraisal inquiry with Mearto. The item presented appears to be an oil painting on canvas rendered in an Impressionistic style . The scene depicts a wintery landscape and is set in a gilt frame. The item appears to date to the mid 20th century. The painting appears to be signed to the lower corner, reading, "C. Farcy." I see that you have attributed the painting to Henry Francois Farny (1847 - 1916). Unfortunately, the painting does not depict the artists style or hand. Further, the signature does not match known examples of Farny's signature and the painting presented appear to date to after 1916.
Instead of Farny, the painting is more likely attributed to C. Farny. Farcy was a French regional artist born in 1941. Many online reference identify the artist as Claude Farcy. While the artist is relatively unknown, we do know that their work was held in exhibitions throughout French and Germany.
The estimate provided is based on recent auction estimates and results of other comparable mid century oil painting attributed to C. Farcy or Claude Farcy, depicting landscapes. The estimate is contingent on a full condition report. Please note asking or dealer prices may vary. Thank you and please take care.
