French Horn in original case. Needs to be cleaned but didn't want to do so until I spoke to an appraiser. Roughly 28" tall x 16" wide x 12" deep. Horn is roughly 85+ years old. Made by CG Conn, I think is what the engraving says.
Was grandpa's and never exhibited.
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. Based on the photographs and information provided, the subject of this appraisal is a Conn Alto Horn or Tenor Horn with case, circa 1919 to the early 1930s (as Conn did not start lacquering instruments until the 1930s). The composition appears to be unlacquered brass. It is believed from photo comparisons to vintage models to be Conn's 2C New Wonder Alto Horn. The piece features top action and its bell faces up. The piece's serial number is not noted based on the photographs.
Condition of the horn based on photographs shows moderate play-wear and extensive tarnishing, with a dent or possibly a repair in the bell. For a write-up of cleaning horns with unlacquered brass composition, a good summary is available at https://houghtonhorns.com/how-do-i-clean-my-horn/ .
Based on recorded sales of comparable horns in similar condition, Fair Market Value is estimated at $100 to $200, as the piece is assumed to be in need of repair for the dent and professional cleaning and attention.
