What does this mean?

Hello, this item is a Japanese woodblock-printed study text or scholarly volume, most likely dating to the late Edo period to early Meiji period, circa mid-19th century. The binding style is a traditional fukuro-toji, or stab-bound format, commonly used in Japan for educational, literary, Confucian, and philosophical texts before modern Western-style bookbinding became widespread. The title panel includes the characters “中庸” (Chūyō), referring to “The Doctrine of the Mean,” one of the Four Books of Confucian philosophy traditionally studied in East Asian education systems. The pages show vertically printed kanji text produced through carved woodblocks rather than movable type, and the paper appears to be handmade washi. The annotations in red ink suggest historical academic use by a previous owner or student. The overall construction, typography, and printing method strongly support an authentic period example rather than a modern reproduction.

Condition shows expected age-related wear, including creasing, edge losses, staining, surface abrasions, and some weakness to the binding and covers. However, the text block itself appears substantially intact, which is important for collector value. While these educational Confucian texts are not exceptionally rare individually, authentic Edo and early Meiji scholarly books remain collectible among buyers of Japanese manuscripts, Asian antiquities, and traditional printing history. Market value depends heavily on exact dating, edition rarity, completeness, and whether the work can be tied to a notable Kyoto publisher or scholar. Based on the photographs provided and comparable sales of similar Japanese woodblock-bound educational texts, the fair market value would likely fall between $250 and $600 USD.

I have been told that it was owned by Tanaka Kōun, does this mean anything?

Hello Grant,

Thank you for the additional information. The name Tanaka Kōun could potentially add interest, but at present it does not automatically indicate a major historical figure or significantly increase the market value without stronger supporting provenance. “Kōun” was a fairly common art name or scholarly name in Japan during the Edo and Meiji periods, and several individuals used that name across literary, artistic, Buddhist, and academic circles. The handwritten inscription visible in the book does suggest prior ownership or study association, likely by a private scholar, teacher, or student, which is consistent with how Confucian educational texts circulated historically. However, without accompanying documentation, seals clearly identifying the individual, or a traceable historical record linking this exact volume to a notable Tanaka Kōun, the attribution remains tentative rather than commercially transformative.

That said, the association does reinforce the impression that this was a genuinely used scholarly volume rather than a decorative reproduction.
