Bought from a dealer and would like to check the authenticity of the painting and the price.
50x35 cm
Hi Amna,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
I've not been able to match the signature for any artist "A. Brown" working in the early 19th Century; this is not unusual, and likely suggests they had a limited body of work, further supported by the somewhat naive execution of the composition.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
American or English School, Early 19th Century
signed and dated "A. Brown 18--" lower left' inscribed "March 1832" lower right.
Shepherdess in a landscape
oil on canvas
framed, with fragments of a label affixed to the back of the frame.
50 x 35 cm (19 3/4 by 13 3/4 inches)
CONDITION: appears to have a wax reline and/or screening varnish. Some elements of the back indicate some earlier repairs and/or possible repainting. This has been included in the valuation
PROVENANCE: acquired from a gallery
€ 100-150*

Please let us know if you have additional items to appraise, and thank you again for using Mearto.
Hi, sorry for the late reply. But the dealer does not know the name of the artist.
Thank you for the photos.
I'm not finding a match to the signature with the listed artists by the name of "A. Brown" in the databases - did the dealer or gallery you acquired this from tell you who they thought the artist was?
