This is an original oil painting on canvas by renowned Filipino modernist Macario Vitalis, signed and dated “Vitalis 57” on both the front and the back of the canvas. The painting features an abstract maritime or harbor scene, characteristic of Vitalis’s post-impressionist style and vibrant color palette. The piece is in good vintage condition with visible texture and preserved color, housed in what appears to be its original gold-toned wooden frame. The canvas is mounted and framed under linen matting. The back of the canvas clearly bears the artist’s hand-written signature. There is no certificate of authenticity, but the signature, style, and materials are consistent with Vitalis’s authenticated works.

Dear Amira Sultan,
Thank you for your appraisal submission. The work is a maritime oil painting on canvas by Macario Vitalis (Filipino, 1898 - 1989). It depicts anchored boats near a marina in impressionist painting style. There is a signature to the lower right corner, reading "Vitalis 59." Another signature is located to the verso, also reading "Vitalis 59." From the images provided, the work appears to be in good condition with a possibly re-stretched canvas. It measures 20 by 17 inches in frame.
Macario Vitalist left the Philippines for the United States in 1917 as a young adult. He attended art class in San Francisco while working nights as an elevator attendant. Just a few years later, he enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and then settled in France to attend the Academie de Montmartre. In 1963, Vitalis returned to the Philippines and brought influences of French Post-Impressionism to the arts community. Vitalis has a strong secondary art market. To estimate the Fair Market Value of this work, we considered recent sales trends of his work. Oil paintings sell significantly higher than his drawings and watercolors. Noting these trends, we estimate the Fair Market Value of this work between $5,000 and $10,000.
This appraisal is conditional based on the authenticity of the artwork. Due to its possible value, we recommend seeking authentication services of this work.
Kind regards,
Charlotte B.
