Signed work on fiber 23”x18”
I bought this piece in the mid-80’s from a well known gallery located in the Hotel Carlton in Cannes, France
Dear John,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
This undated oil painting appears to be by the French artist called Jean Dufy (1888-1964). It depicts a bouquet and is signed 'Jean Dufy' on the lower right edge. It measures 23"(h) x 18"(w). It is framed, and the condition appears to be good overall. Provenance: Acquired by the present owner around the mid-80s from an art gallery in Cannes (France).
Jean Dufy is a painter, watercolorist, and designer known for his scenes with figures, still-lifes, landscapes, and seascapes. His artistic talents were recognized and nurtured by his older brother Raoul Dufy. His paintings appear to be regularly offered at auction in North American and internationally. Overall, the results are fairly consistent, with works typically selling above their high presale estimates, suggesting a strong and stable market.
The estimation highlighted in red above is based on comparables offered and sold at auction in the last five years. The subject work’s size, the composition, condition (based on photographs and comments provided), and the artists’ current auction market were taken into consideration when determining the estimate. In many cases, pricing for similar items available on the primary (retail) market vary and are often higher than secondary (auction) market examples.
Please note that this valuation has been provided on the condition of authenticity, which may need to be confirmed with additional research. For more information, please visit www.mearto.com/authenticate.
