Hello, this item is an original, signed color photograph by Fritz Henle titled “Carnival – St. Croix”, dated to 1970. Fritz Henle (1909–1993), often referred to as “the last of the great classical photographers”, was widely respected for his elegant documentary photography across genres, from fashion and portraiture to travel and architecture. His work in the Caribbean, especially in St. Croix where he spent many years, is particularly collectible. The image shows vibrant carnival dancers in saturated costume and fruit-laden headdresses, and it is hand-signed by the artist in pencil below the photograph. The mat and print are in good condition, though the frame’s rear shows minor wear, which is not unusual for a mid- to late-20th-century presentation.
Signed, vintage Henle prints—especially with Caribbean subject matter—have a strong following among collectors of mid-century photography and ethnographic visual culture. Though he is better known for his black-and-white work, his color images from the Virgin Islands remain culturally significant.
