PAINTING OF A STEAMBOAT BY GREEK PAINTER E.KAMPOSOS(Ε.Καμπόσος)
25 April 2022
Description

The painting must have been painted 120 years ago.Its dimensions about 35X25 cm.The wooden frame is nicely carved decorated and painted gold but it has opened and spread apart without both the painting and the frame sustaining the slightest damage. However the paint needs to be remounted on its frame since now it is unframed. Two works of the same greek painter under the title BARGO POSEIDON were auctioned in the past. The one by Christie s on 24.5.2000 under maximum estimated price 23.700 and minimum 17.300 euros and the other by Greek Auctioneers" Petros Vergos" on 8.11.2005 minimum estimated 7000€ , maximum estimated 9000 € .The steamboat is named "arkadisa" as far as I can read it .The paintig is in good codition, and it carries the signature of the painter. Most likely it is original.

What does this mean?

Dear Syrichas,

Thank you for your help and patience. My sincere apologies for the delay with the appraisal.

The presented object appears to be a painting made in oil paint on canvas with the measurements of 25 x 35 cm. The painting depicts a paddle steamer and is signed in the lower-left corner with the name in Greek characters "E. Kamposos".
This painting was probably made in the late 19th century. Sadly no additional information for an artist with this name fitting in style and motif is given by reference books and databases.
Comparable objects were recently not offered and sold on the international auction market. This artist is not mentioned in the common auction result databases and also not in the auction results of Christie's. There are just not reliable statistics by the website nikias.gr which indicate very high estimates. Both paintings were not sold which indicates that both estimated prices were too high for the market.

This piece is in good condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 1.000 to 2.000 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.

An artwork of such high potential value requires further authentication research. This estimate is provided on the condition of authenticity.

With kind regards,

George
