What does this mean?

Good morning, Mary,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. Are the shades a metal or a fabric? I can't quite make that out from the photos. Also, what is the diameter of the shades at their bottom?

Thank you!
Delia

The bottom of shades are 17 1/2 across. and 8 inches tall. It is pierced brass. Will send more pictures shortly.

Thanks for the EXCELLENT photos, Mary.
If you do not plan to sell these, you can touch up the one to an appearance/working condition that you want. However, if you are planning to sell them, it's better to leave them "as-is" for two reasons: 1) potential buyers are often deterred by signs of recent repair and 2) the cost of repair may be more than the lamps would bring at auction so you don't want to be in the hole on these, financially.
Based on the photographs and information provided, and subject to examination, these are:
A pair of Aesthetic Movement bronze three-light lamps with Moorish style pierced brass and fringed shades
American or English, late 19th Century
30 inches tall overall; shades 17 1/2 inches diameter
CONDITION: client reports one to be better condition than the other, in unspecified condition.
PROVENANCE: inherited
$400-600*
