Pair of two unbranded vintage leather dolls
25 September 2025
Description

These painted leather dolls were found in an antique shop in the Northwest US. I am unable to identify them. They are unmarked and Google Lens does not bring back any matching results online. They are both in very good condition. One has very slight loosening of stitches on its back. One of them is holding what appears to be a whip of some sort. Perhaps a jockey? Please let me know if you are able to identify these or if you need more photos.

What does this mean?

Hi Stacey,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

I apologize for the delay in getting back to you on these - the doll specialist I asked didn't have additional information l so I asked a couple more; unfortunately, while none could give specifics, all agreed that this was an unusual pair, or unique or small=production handmade painted leather dolls, probably late 19th Century and possibly American, though they could have been made in other countries as well.

When it came to value, the retail price most agreed with was between $100 and $200 for the pair, with a fair-market value of $75-125 for auction purposes.

Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

Two primitive hand-made painted leather dolls
American or European, late 19th Century
Comprising a female doll with stylized full-bodied skirt, the other a cavalry officer with breeches, tall boots, uniform jacket and cap. Neither signed, labeled or otherwise marked.
11 inches high
CONDITION: Both appear to be in good condition
PROVENANCE: Acquired from a second-hand store
$ 75-125*
*represents a fair-market value for auction purposes; retail or asking price may vary.

Please let us know if you have additional items to appraise, or questions/concerns, and thank you again for using Mearto.

Hello Delia. Just circling back on my appraisal for the two unbranded leather dolls. I know you sent them on to a doll expert and was wondering when I might hear something back? I would like to sell them and need to understand their worth. Could you please send me an update on timing / progress for this? Thank you so much!
