This rug was bought by my grandfather who lived in Iran from 1954-1960. It was probably purchased near Isfahan, where he lived most of that time. It is in excellent condition, but it is very different from the other Persian rugs that he brought home.

The use of large, nested diamonds in yellow, red, and blue is typical of Caucasian or Kurdish tribal kilims, particularly from areas like Shirvan, Karabagh, or Eastern Anatolia. It demonstrates the flat-weave technique seen in Kilim carpets.
Kilims are usually more affordable - both at auction and in rug galleries - and ones of this size and vintage usually sell for between $1,200-1,800.

An antique Caucasian kilim
made in Eastern turkey, early 20th Century
Employing a vibrant multicolored palette of crimson, indigo, saffron yellow, and ivory and centering three large diamond medallions within multicolored geometric borders; varicolored selvedges (fringe trim).
65 by 109 inches (5 feet 5 inches by 9 feet 1 inch)
CONDITION: This appears to be in good condition; value assumes no tears, repairs, stains or odors.
PROVENANCE: Inherited; purchased in Iran in the mid 20th Century
