What does this mean?

Dear Bruce,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. My sincere apologies for the delay with the appraisal.

The presented object appears to be a gouache with the measurements of 4.75 x 5.25 inches. The drawing depicts a couple talking about a painting. This artwork is made in the style of the 18th century but was made in the 19th century. It is signed with the name "M. Baudin".

Sadly no additional information for an artist with this name fitting in style and motif is given by reference books and databases.

Comparable objects were recently offered and sold on the international auction market.
This piece is in good condition and no severe damage is visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 50 to 100 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.

With kind regards,

George

Your estimate of my Baudouin is ridiculous. This is an original ON COPPER. Reproductions and engravings are selling for 300 to 400.00.

How can you justify such a low valuation!

1st , it is 18th century. A miniature on copper...which BAUDOUIN was famous for.

2nd, it's not about a "painting" it's about "sex". Baudouin was famous for his " Bawdy" paintings.

3rd, the signature PA BAUDOUIN, not M Baudin.

How can a professional miss all these points?

As with any period artists they produced several paintings of a work. Especially popular ones. I contend BAUDOUIN made many copies of his miniatures of Bawdy subjects as they were collected by men of that period. This work is one of them.

Please provide any information to the contrary as your appraisal makes no sense. I feel as a paying customer I'm deserving of a better explanation .

Dear Bruce.

Thank you for your email and I am very sorry that you had other expectations. Sadly this artwork is much weaker in expression, depiction of the figuration, and the technique as artworks by Pierre Antoine Baudouin. The signature reads clearly as M. Baudin. There are many of these 19th-century miniatures on the market and just not many collectors which explain the low estimate.

With kind regards,
George
